Dominican carrier Arajet has officially introduced its new route between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The inaugural flight took off from Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo at 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday, landing at Luis Muñoz Marín Airport in San Juan just 40 minutes later. This new service marks a significant milestone for Arajet as it continues to expand its network and enhance regional connectivity within the Caribbean and beyond.
Arajet will operate this direct flight four times a week, with departures on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This addition strengthens the bond between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, connecting the significant Dominican diaspora residing on the island with their homeland. Starting from June 6, Arajet will also offer a direct flight linking San Juan with Punta Cana, with three weekly frequencies on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Arajet’s new service is expected to further bolster tourism, commerce, and cultural exchange between the two nations, while also providing a vital connection for Puerto Ricans traveling to the Dominican Republic. The inaugural flight was attended by the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism, David Collado, along with Arajet’s CEO and Founder, Víctor Pacheco, who marked the occasion by proudly displaying the flags of both countries.
Arajet’s CEO expressed great enthusiasm for the new route, emphasizing that the launch was made possible thanks to the recent entry into the Open Skies Agreement between the United States and the Dominican Republic. This agreement has opened up key markets, facilitating airlines like Arajet to expand operations across the region. With this new route, the airline aims to offer both affordable and efficient travel options to Puerto Rican passengers while promoting further tourism and cultural exchanges between the two Caribbean nations.
Arajet’s route expansion doesn’t end with Puerto Rico. By the close of 2025, the airline plans to serve 28 destinations across 17 countries, providing over 250 connections to cities in North, Central, and South America. This continued growth reflects Arajet’s ambition to enhance its network, catering to the growing demand for intercontinental travel while maintaining its reputation for operational safety and affordability.
The expansion is expected to significantly benefit travelers, with over 88,000 seats made available for the new routes in 2025 alone. Within the first 48 hours of announcing ticket sales, a substantial portion of those seats had already been sold. This rapid uptake indicates the strong demand for affordable travel options between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, further cementing Arajet’s role as a key player in the regional aviation market.
Additionally, the new routes will offer Puerto Ricans seamless access to 11 more destinations, including popular vacation spots such as Aruba, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru. These destinations are accessible through Arajet’s hubs in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, making it easier than ever for Puerto Rican travelers to explore the broader region.
Representatives from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company expressed their excitement about the arrival of Arajet, noting that the airline’s expansion marks a significant milestone in strengthening cultural, tourist, and commercial ties between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Willianette Robles, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, highlighted the importance of the new flights, stating that they offer more access and enhanced connectivity, facilitating greater exchange between the two islands.
The Governor of Puerto Rico, Jennifer González, and other dignitaries also celebrated the opening of this new route, recognizing its importance in reinforcing the deep economic, cultural, and familial connections that bind Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. In the past year, nearly 700,000 passengers traveled between these two destinations, underscoring the need for more robust air travel options. Arajet’s new services, therefore, open up greater opportunities for both nations, enhancing the flow of people, business, and tourism.
As Arajet’s network continues to expand, the airline’s commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and safe travel options remains unwavering. With its growing footprint across the Americas, Arajet is setting the stage for a future where seamless air travel connects people, cultures, and opportunities across the region.
