Doctors Threaten Strike Over Homeopathic Practitioners Registration Decision, ET HealthWorld

Pune: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) local city chapter and state body as well as other doctors have warned of a 24-hour strike starting from July 11, unless govt withdraws the decision of Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) to register homeopathic practitioners as ‘modern medicine practitioners’.

On Tuesday, IMA Pune and various doctors’ associations submitted a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis through Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi.

In a statement by IMA Pune, it stated that govt is issuing a new order that will come into effect from July 15, implementing its decision to register homeopathy (BHMS) doctors who have completed a one-year bridge course certificate course in pharmacology (CCMP) in a separate register of MMC.

Dr Sunil Ingale, president, IMA Pune, said, “In Feb this year, IMA filed a petition in high court against Maharashtra govt’s possible decision. The matter is pending in court. In such a situation, govt issuing a new order would constitute potential contempt of court. Doctors trained in MBBS are fully trained in scientific and evidence-based treatment methods. Education of BHMS doctors is completely based on homeopathy and they do not get scientific education in modern medicines, surgery and emergency medical management.”

Dr Sanjay Patil, chairperson, Hospital Board of India, Pune chapter, said, “This decision is dangerous and directly jeopardises public health.

The CCMP course is a one-year bridge course designed for homeopathic doctors. It provides a very limited amount of basic knowledge of pharmacology and medicine and is in no way equivalent to the average five-and-a-half-year MBBS course.

If such doctors are recognized as ‘modern medicine practitioners’, ordinary patients will be confused. In emergency situations, wrong medication and diagnosis or surgical ignorance can endanger a patient’s life. This tarnishes the image of recognised MBBS doctors.”

IMA Pune has gained support from the Pune Radiology Association, Orthopaedic Association, Ophthalmic Association, Society of Anaesthesiologists Pune, Pune Radiology and Imaging Association, Indian Pathology Association, Physicians of India, IMA PCB, Association of Otolaryngologists of India (Pune Branch), Pune Obstetric and Gynaecological Society, and Pune Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine Association (PASMA).
