Mumbai: The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) launched a new initiative on Friday requiring its 1.4 lakh registered member-doctors to download and showcase their QR-code-based ‘know your doctor’ card in their clinics. The MMC, which functions as a quasi-judicial organisation, oversees allopathic medical practitioners and can revoke or suspend medical licences following patient or family grievances.

The council distributed an email on Friday notifying doctors about the QR code’s availability. This verification system will enable patients to access details about their doctor such as current credentials, licences, specialisations and expertise. The display of these QR codes will be compulsory for all registered medical practitioners in their clinics. According to Dr Suhas Pingle, who previously served as an elected MMC representative, this simple QR system will effectively combat unauthorised medical practice.

“The healthcare system in Maharashtra continues to face a significant challenge with unlicensed and fraudulent medical practices, which pose a serious threat, particularly in vulnerable and rural areas,” said the MMC letter sent by administrator Dr V Rughwani.
