Nagpur: The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra, on Saturday issued, and then withdrew within an hour, a circular directing all govt medical and dental colleges in the state not to sanction leave for doctors and staff in view of a possible national emergency arising from the current war-like situation on India’s borders.

The circular, signed by DMER director Dr Ajay Chandanwale, instructed the heads of all medical colleges and affiliated hospitals to withhold all vacation and long-term leave applications of medical officers, faculty, and staff members.

The directive cited the “prevailing war-like conditions” and emphasised the need for preparedness should medical personnel be required for national duty, particularly those affiliated with the Territorial Army or reserve forces.

The circular stated: “It cannot be ruled out that emergency situations may arise requiring the involvement of medical professionals. Hence, no leaves should be sanctioned for officers and employees working in medical education institutions until further orders.”

However, shortly after the circular was issued, it was withdrawn without an official explanation. Dr Chandanwale, while speaking to TOI, confirmed that the decision was rolled back within an hour.

He did not share the reason. Sources said it was possibly due to the sensitive nature of the subject or after review by higher authorities.

As of now, there is no formal statement on whether a revised advisory will be issued.
