File photo of Brian Lara© AFP Ahead of Indian cricket team’s all-important Tour of Australia, that starts next month, the recent loss to New Zealand at home has raised a few doubts about whether the current side needs some changes or not. One star who is most likely to be not picked for the Tour of Australia is Cheteshwar Pujara. The veteran batter, known for his dogged resistance in the face of strong challenge, has a proven record in Australia. The 36-year old has been overlooked from international matches, and the last match he played for India was…
Wellington: Anyone who has spent time inside a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) knows it’s intense. For the tiny babies cared for in these wards, any infection could prove fatal. Great care is taken to prevent the spread of pathogens, but outbreaks still occur. Traditionally, detecting outbreaks within a NICU has been reactive – only after multiple babies fall ill at the same time. Our research is advancing the use of whole-genome sequencing technologies to detect outbreaks early and stamp out bacteria before they threaten more babies. From reactive to proactive NICU outbreak surveillance usually involves monitoring rates of illness…
White House says health insurance needs to fully cover condoms, other over-the-counter birth control
WASHINGTON — People with private health insurance would be able to pick up over-the-counter methods like condoms, the “morning after” pill and birth control pills for free under a new rule the White House proposed on Monday. Right now, health insurers must cover the cost of prescribed contraception, including prescription birth control or even condoms that doctors have issued a prescription for. But the new rule would expand that coverage, allowing millions of people on private health insurance to pick up free condoms, birth control pills, or “morning after” pills from local storefronts without a prescription. The proposal comes days…
Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar lauded Sarfaraz Khan for his attacking 150 in the recent first Test against New Zealand, adding that his batting returns were even more remarkable than his waistline. After bagging a duck in the first innings, where India were bowled out for 46, Sarfaraz was at the forefront of India’s second innings total of 462 through an attacking 150 – his maiden Test hundred – laced with 18 fours and three sixes. He wowed cricket fans at M Chinnaswamy Stadium through his cheeky and unorthodox shots, especially through the square region in the off-side.…
WASHINGTON — The assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally in July was “preventable and should not have happened,” according to a bipartisan House panel that is investigating the shooting and what it calls the “stunning security failures” at the event. The report from a House task force, released Monday, is just the latest look at the cascading and wide-ranging law enforcement failings that preceded the July 13 shooting at the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally where Trump was struck in the ear by gunfire. One rallygoer was killed in the shooting and two others were wounded.Members of both…

A Republican-led House committee reviewing the work of the House select committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol has released a report Republicans say disputes a piece of testimony delivered by one of the panel’s star witnesses, Cassidy Hutchinson, during her 2022 testimony. In the report, first obtained by ABC News, the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight says a handwriting analyst, who the committee retained, determined that a note Hutchinson testified she had written for then-President Donald Trump to read during the attack on the Capitol was actually written by then-White House lawyer Eric Herschmann.During Hutchinson’s testimony…
RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. — Renee Kyro already has voted for Republican nominee Donald Trump for the third consecutive presidential election. But she plans to volunteer for the first time, reaching out to her neighbors in hurricane-battered western North Carolina to make sure they have a voting plan amid a flurry of precinct changes.“I want to say I’m confident he wins, but I’m worried that people are just overwhelmed and may need some help or encouragement,” she said, standing outside an early voting site in the conservative stronghold of Rutherford County. “I just can’t imagine Kamala Harris as president.”To the east, in…
New Delhi: Dr. RV Asokan, president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), has voiced strong support for the legalisation of prenatal gender determination tests. Dr Asokan said on Sunday that the existing prohibition has not significantly improved India’s gender ratio over the past three decades.Since the enactment of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act in 1994, prenatal gender determination and sex-selective abortions have been illegal in India. This legislation was intended to combat female foeticide and enhance the sex ratio in the country.Despite this, Asokan expressed skepticism about the law’s efficacy. “After 30 years, what has this law…
