The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, has officially announced the designation of the Wrights Front Range and Wrights Rear Range Lighthouses under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act.

Wrights Rear Range Lighthouse

Constructed in 1894, the Wrights Rear Range Lighthouse represents the second generation of lighthouses built in Prince Edward Island after Confederation. It played a crucial role in supporting Victoria Harbour as a vital shipping hub for the southwestern region of the island. The 9.75-metre (32 feet) wooden square-tapered tower was designed to help navigate vessels into Victoria Harbour from the Northumberland Strait. Situated in a mixed residential and agricultural area at the end of Beach Light Road, the lighthouse is located 1.25 kilometres west-southwest of Victoria.

Wrights Front Range Lighthouse

Erected in 1903, the Wrights Front Range Lighthouse is a 3.7-metre (12 feet) wooden square-tapered tower, similarly designed to guide vessels into Victoria Harbour from the Northumberland Strait. This lighthouse stands in an open field at a point locally known as “Paul’s Bluff,” about 1 kilometre southwest of Victoria.

These new designations bring the total number of lighthouses protected under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act to 114 across eight provinces. This includes some of Canada’s most historically and architecturally significant lighthouses, such as the Fisgard Lighthouse in British Columbia, Île du Pot à l’Eau-de-Vie in Quebec, and Point Amour in Newfoundland and Labrador. These landmarks serve as cherished symbols of Canada’s maritime history.

The Government of Canada continues to collaborate closely with Indigenous Peoples, community organizations, and various levels of government to protect and preserve these heritage lighthouses for future generations. The Minister of Environment and Climate Change makes these designations on the recommendation of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.
